Wat is Ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is een lange plant met paarse of groene bladeren en rode vruchten. Het is één van de meest gebruikte kruiden in de leer van Ayurveda en wordt al duizenden jaren toegepast als Ayurvedisch kruid. Ashwagandha staat ook bekend als ‘Indiase Ginseng’ of ‘winterkers’. Vanwege de veelzijdige toepassingen wordt Ashwagandha zelfs een koninklijk kruid genoemd. Ashwagandha groeit in India, maar ook in andere gebieden van Azië, Afrika en het Middellandse Zeegebied.

**Ashwagandha heeft een adaptogene werking op het lichaam. Adaptogenen zorgen ervoor dat fysiologische processen in ons lichaam gestabiliseerd worden en dat de homeostase bevordert wordt. Dit betekent dat het vermogen van het lichaam om het interne milieu stabiel te houden ondersteund wordt, terwijl het externe milieu van het individu aan continue verandering onderhevig is. Onze cellen (bouwstenen van het lichaam) zijn hierdoor minder gevoelig voor stressfactoren uit onze externe omgeving, zodat ons lichaam en geest beter in balans kunnen blijven.
