L-Cysteine is een zwavelhoudend aminozuur dat van nature voorkomt in bijvoorbeeld mais. L-Cysteine is de biochemisch actievere vorm van het aminozuur L-Cystine.
L-Cysteine is belangrijk voor de leverfunctie en de zuivering van het lichaam omdat het verbindingen vormt met zware metalen. met name koper.
