Vochthuishouding
De nieren houden de hoeveelheid zout en water in het bloed constant. Overschotten worden via de urine afgevoerd. De nieren filteren ieder uur zo'n 60 liter bloed. Dat is aanzienlijk, want een mens heeft gemiddeld 5 liter bloed. Al het bloed in het lichaam wordt dus ruim 200 keer per dag door de nieren gefilterd. Ondanks grote wisselingen in opname van voedsel en in activiteit van de stofwisseling, moet de samenstelling van de lichaamsvloeistoffen constant blijven. Dit is geen eenvoudige opgave en soms kunnen de nieren dan ook best wat hulp gebruiken.
