Wild Yam (botanische naam: Dioscorea villosa) is inheems in het Midwesten en Oosten van de Verenigde Staten, Latijns-Amerika (met name Mexico) en Azië. Er bestaan zo'n 150 verschillende variëteiten, allemaal met dezelfde positieve eigenschappen voor de gezondheid.
Wild Yam wordt traditioneel gebruikt voor het behoud van een sterk beenderstelsel en vanwege zijn positieve invloed op de vrouwelijke voortplantingsorganen. De plant is goed voor de maag en draagt bij aan een verantwoord cholesterolgehalte.
Wild Yam dankt zijn effectiviteit aan werkstoffen zoals diosgenine en dioscoretine. Deze laatste stof draagt bij aan het behoud van een gezonde bloedsuikerspiegel. Extracten van Wild Yam hebben anti-oxidante eigenschappen. Aangetoond is dat Wild Yam HDL-cholesterol (het goede cholesterol) verhoogt.
